  • Pilotage

    Service provided to captains of ships or floating vessels in order to facilitate port entry and departure or any manoeuvres necessary within the Port or the geographical boundary of the pilotage area in safe conditions all in accordance with the State Ports and Merchant Marine Act and General Pilotage Regulations.

  • Towage

    Port service, known as towage, intended to aid vessel movements. This is done by way of another vessel, the tug boat, at the request of the towed vessel. The tug boat provides its motor force or, if necessary, accompanies the vessel within port waters.

  • Mooring

    Port service provided to pick up the ship's mooring ropes and secure them to the fixed elements meant for this purpose and indicated by the ship's captain in the mooring area assigned by the Port Authority. This is done in such a way to enable berthing and cast off operations, the alter being when the mooring ropes are let loose following the captain's instructions.

  • The Shipping Agent

    This is an individual or a legal entity acting as an independent intermediary in the name of and on behalf of a ship owner. The ship agent's main functions are:

    • To provide services and attention to the vessel and the crew.

    • Arrange all necessary Customs formalities for export or import clearance.

    • To arrange administrative and technical formalities relative to the vessel's scale in a particular port on behalf of the ship owner.

    • To issue, on behalf of the ship owner and as depositary of the goods, the document known as ENTRÉGUESE (delivery note) which the owner of the goods must have to be able to withdraw them from the docks. This document is provided only on settlement of all the costs incurred by the transport and handling of the goods.

    • To settle payment with the Port Authority, on behalf of the ship owner, of the tariffs accrued by the ship's stay in the Port.

  • The Stevedore Company

    This company is responsible for performing cargo handling operations in the Port.

    The main cargo handling operations are the following:

    For outgoing cargo:

    • Receipt

    • Loading

    • Stowage

    For incoming cargo:

    • Unstowage

    • Unloading

    • Delivery

    The stevedore company carries out other operations like:

    • Stuffing and destuffing containers

    • Cargo classification

    • Horizontal movements to position containers in inspection areas

  • The Freight Forwarder

    This is the individual or legal entity that coordinates goods transport in accordance with the customer's requirements (importers/exporters).

    To do so, he contacts Ship Agents, Customs Brokers, transport companies (carriers) and, in general, all service providers connected with goods transport activities.

    To carry out his activities, the Freight Forwarder may have a network of foreign agents so enabling him to extend his services accordingly.

    The freight forwarder may specialise in the transport of certain types of goods, the means of transport he uses, the geographical areas he covers or the range of services he provides.

    His services may be used in any foreign trade operation although his intervention is particularly recommended for:

    • Companies which, because of the nature and/or volume of their imports or exports, do not have a foreign trade department and prefer to contract third party services to control operations and costs.

    • Specific operations for which the intervention of an expert is advisable because of their particular nature or complexity.

  • Customs Broker

    This is the individual or legal entity authorised to carry out in Customs the necessary clearance formalities of goods on behalf of a third party in any of the following cases: import, export or transit.

    Together with the owner of the goods, the Customs Broker is the only legally authorised agent that can:

    • Present the necessary documents in Customs for clearance of the goods.

    • To present the APPLICATION FOR INSPECTION of the goods in Customs either on the latter's request or that of the owner of the goods.

    • Be present during the physical inspection, as representative of the owner of the goods.

    • Process the various formalities and deal with the requirements of the different Inspection Services.

    • Settle duties, VAT and all other amounts due on behalf of the owner of the goods.
