Our Port - The origin of ports
- The reality of The Port of Seville
The
origin of ports The first ports in history sprang up where natural
conditions made it possible for vessels to berth and take shelter. These geographical
accidents together with their primitive facilities were the basis for the start
of sea trade which soon proved to be more effective than trade transported overland.
But, today, a Port is a basic element in the logistics and goods transport
chain satisfying the needs of an endless number of industries and citizens often
located in large built-up urban areas. The optimisation of resources,
strategic projection, technological innovation and customer service are values
that are deeply rooted in the Port management culture carrying as much weight
or even more than geographical conditions. The
reality of the Port of Seville Situated 80 kms. from the mouth
of the River Guadalquivir, the Port of Seville is the only commercial river port
in Spain. . Its projection is towards the Atlantic and the Mediterranean and several
factors raise it to a position of first class logistic and commercial centre:
- Seville, capital city of Andalusia, is the main economic, cultural and
artistic centre in Southern Europe as well as being one of the most easily accessible
cities in Spain.
- It has sufficient capacity and adequate modern equipment
to manage all types of traffic: cranes, container terminals, RO-RO ramps, storage
infrastructure, etc.
- Its industrial and service area is one of the largest
in the whole Spanish port system.
- It is the natural path for trade between
the Iberian Peninsula and the Canary Isles.
- Its hinterland covers the
whole of Western Andalusia, Extremadura and, for certain products, the centre
of Spain.
